We have talked previously about the surgical treatment options for breast cancer, but so far we have focused predominantly on female breast cancer (because they are the most commonly affected). The fact is that breast cancer does not solely impact women. Contrary to popular belief, men can develop breast cancer as well. In this article, we will discuss male breast cancer – its symptoms, causes, treatment options, and when to seek medical attention.
How do Men Get Breast Cancer?
When most people learn about male breast cancer for the first time their reaction is typically: “how can men get breast cancer when they don’t have breasts?” The truth is that every person, male and female, is born with breast tissue. In women, breast tissue begins to develop during puberty. This does not happen in men, but because they have some breast tissue, breast cancer development is a possibility.
Breast cancer can develop in men of any age, but it is most common in older men.
Signs of Male Breast Cancer
The signs of breast cancer in men are similar to female breast cancer symptoms, and can include any of the following:
- A lump in the breast tissue
- Unusual changes to the nipple or skin covering the breast including redness and scaling.
- Nipple discharge
If the cancer is identified early, the prognosis for male breast cancer recovery is good. The problem is that most men fail to seek treatment for their symptoms right away. If you notice any of these symptoms, make an appointment with a medical professional for diagnosis and treatment.
Treating Breast Cancer in Men
Treatment for male breast cancer is divided into four main categories:
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Hormone Therapy
- Surgery
The best treatment for you will depend on your age, medical condition, and the stage of the breast cancer itself. Surgery to remove the cancerous tissue is typically the best option for eradicating the cancer. If you have been diagnosed with male breast cancer, or are concerned about a lump in your breast talk to a skilled general surgeon about your surgical options.
